Designed to be used in a multitude of ways to fit in with many different teaching styles and to promote literacy in a differing caliber of pupils in the same classroom, Macbeth Interactive Motion Comic offers a choice of three language options: Original Text (original Shakespeare with context notes), Plain Text (plain modern English) or Quick Text (reduced dialogue) – all using the same animated artwork giving you a classroom of pupils, of whatever ability, effectively reading from the ‘same’ page. There is also an option to view “No Text” (empty speech balloons for pupils to fill in the dialogue!).

Teachers can retain full control over playback of the motion comic choosing to use it on their whiteboard or computer, or it can be used simultaneously by any number of computers that are connected to the school network. (It can even be remotely accessed on an extended network so pupils can access it from home).

Macbeth Interactive Motion Comic can be used with or without the corresponding Classical Comics printed graphic novels, as the Act/Line/Scene references throughout the animation link back to any traditional Macbeth script.

Interacting with the motion comic is really versatile too. Choose to:

  • watch the whole “movie” (even switching between text versions as you go if desired)
  • pause to hover over highlighted words to receive helpful context notes
  • jump back to the dramatis personae for a reminder of the characters list
  • select to watch just certain scenes
  • choose panel by panel navigation (then select at what point in the panel you’d like to play the animation – fast forward, rewind, pause, resume, return to start of the panel or skip to the end)
  • watch the animation on split screen
  • watch with or without sound

And it’s not just used for promoting literacy. It can be used across a range of subjects including, but not restricted to, English literature, English language, history, art and drama as well as inspiring individual creativity.

    The words ‘Shakespeare’ and ‘Macbeth’ are both heavy-duty and intimidating for teenagers. English teachers all know that there’s something wonderful in the language and story, however pupils are not easily convinced by reading the play, and engagement is crucial to their success in external examinations.

    However, the form of a graphic novel is something more contemporary and familiar to today’s teens – and the impact of reading Macbeth as a graphic novel was stunning in our school! Our pupils immediately engaged with the text, and lost themselves in the story and the characters in a way which would no doubt have gladdened the heart of The Bard himself!

    The motion comic is our first choice for introducing the play to our pupils and once they’re hooked, we move on to analysing the language of particular scenes through the different text versions. Following this we act out the scenes from the original text and consider how Shakespeare would have produced a performance within the confines of an Elizabethan theatre.

    This was only possible once the pupils had got over their initial reservations about Shakespeare’s work, and the motion comic is an essential classroom tool in achieving this. Even lower ability pupils are able to access and enjoy Macbeth, and then have the confidence to move on to analysing the text.

    Eleven different teachers have used it in different ways depending on their preferred teaching styles and the calibre of the pupils in their group – the different language options, the ability to select particular scenes and also play it with a split screen have been great for this. It’s very quickly become an essential resource!

    Further to this, we had been running an after-school club for Year 11s who needed to further understand the play – and they found it useful to spend an hour looking at the interactive Macbeth as a reminder of the story-line; much more enjoyable than watching the Polanski film, far more engaging and accurate to Shakespeare’s script.

    The graphic novels have encouraged pupils to become more independent in their studying of Macbeth, they don’t need a teacher around to be able to understand the text and are happier to read the play on their own, in the confidence that they won’t have a problem with understanding. Your interactive Macbeth has been used extensively with our Year 10 pupils as they prepared for their Controlled Assessment. We were interested to find that results for Macbeth controlled assessments were better than results for a more modern text with the same assessment objectives, but which doesn’t have the language barriers!
