Classroom use

Description

Designed for the classroom, this resource book contains activities and exercises to help the teaching of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.

Who was Mary Shelley? What is the gothic novel? What makes the Frankenstein monster evil? These are a few of the questions that are explored in this teaching guide based on the famous novel first published in 1818.

Although it was designed to be used alongside the Classical Comics graphic novels, it can be used with any version of the book.

The exercises have been approached from a cross-curriculum perspective so that they cover not only literature and literacy, but also history, technology, drama, reading, speaking, writing and art. Using a comics approach, the book includes such topics as Shelley’s language, how to describe Victor Frankenstein, and more, while engaging students with quizzes, word searches, coloring pages, and a “draw your own monster” feature.

The age range is 10 to 17, but of course within that span exists a broad spectrum of skill levels. Therefore, this study guide includes activities for all, providing many opportunities for differentiated teaching and for the tailoring of lessons to meet individual needs.

Examples of some of the activities include:
Background
Character
Language
Understanding
Drama/Art

A CD is included that contains the pages in PDF format so that they can be used on any whiteboard or local intranet system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which text version is right for me?

For our Shakespeare plays, we create 3 text versions:

Plain text

The entire play as a full colour graphic novel.
In order to be true to the Bard's works, our Shakespeare titles feature the entire script, unabridged, in the original setting. That is our starting point - the "Original Text".

Plain Text

The entire play translated into plain English.
Our research revealed how the complex Shakespeare language can deter many readers, especially those coming to a play for the first time. To cater for that, we publish a translation into plain English (from the entire script) that we call "Plain Text".

Quick Text

The entire play in quick modern English for a fast-paced read.

We took this process a stage further to create our third reading level, "Quick Text", that features reduced and simplified dialogue for younger and reluctant readers. This version is also ideal for students where English is not the first language, and also for a quick introduction to the play for even mature students.

For our Literary Fiction titles, we create 2 text versions:

Original Text

The full story with minor abridgement to fit the graphic novel format.

Quick Text

A reduced simplified dialogue version of the Original Text for a fast-paced read.

There is no Plain Text version as the language of the Original Text doesn’t require modernisation.
